Languedoc derives from "language of the Occitan." Occitan is an old language that was spoken mainly
between the areas of Rousilon (Catalan) and Provence (Provencal).
In 476 AD, the Roman empire collapsed. By 700 AD, the area was occupied by the Saracens. Over the
next several hundred years, there were intermittent wars fought in the area. By 1276, most of the area
was under the rule of the king of Majorca. By 1500, the French established control over the area. In
1666, construction of the Canal du Midi began.
