Autignac is in the heart of the Herault district (district 34), which is part of the Languedoc-Roussillon
region. Languedoc covers the whole of the western end of the Mediterranean. The region of Provence
covers the eastern end of the Mediterranean. Languedoc stretches from the Cevennes mountains in the
north, Carmargue to the east, and the Pyrenees and Spanish border to the west.

The village of Autignac, (population 750, including 100 children in the village grammar school), is
located about 20 minutes north of Beziers, (population 70,000), and is 35 minutes from the
Mediterranean. The regional capital of Montpellier, (population 200,000) is 45 minutes to the east. The
foothills of the Cevennes and the Regional naturel Parc du Haut Languedoc are located about 20 minutes
north of the village.

The village lies off the D909 highway, (one lane in each direction), to Bedarieux. The village is
surrounded on four sides by vineyards. Unlike most villages in the area, there is no road running through
the village. The result is a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.

The village has a café, a boulangerie (i.e., bakery), boucherie (i.e., butcher), a tabac (think 7 11), a
pharmacy, a bed and breakfast (run by an English couple), and a post office. There are open air markets
on Thursday and Friday mornings. (Markets are held in neighboring villages on different days of the
week.) There is a 15th century church in the village center and petanque (boules) is played daily during
the summer months.

The café serves lunch only and enjoys a reputation among the locals for good and economical meals.
The plat du jour, (the three course special of the day), is 11 euros. People from nearby villages come to
Autignac for lunch. There are restaurants in neighboring villages, and in Beziers, which offer dinner.

The countryside surrounding the village is largely used for growing grapes. As in neighboring Provence,
wine has been produced in Languedoc for more than 2000 years. Languedoc produces one third of
France's table wines. With the worldwide excess production of wines, Languedoc has been replanting to
produce better quality wines. Languedoc is becoming a respected producer of quality wines, and many
domains produce wines that command high prices. Autignac is located in the Faugeres A.O.C.,
(Appellation d'origine contrôlée - this is the highest French wine classification. It indicates that the wine
meets the strict requirements concerning the vineyard of origin, the type of vine grown, the method of
production, and the volume of alcohol present.)
